Health insurance programs are offered through the individual states, The types of programs and eligibility requirements vary. Some programs are provided through companies like Anthem Healthkeepers Blue Cross/Blue Shield. For example, FAMIS is Virginia's health insurance program for children under age 19. It provides access to quality health services for children of working families. FAMIS covers all the medical services growing children need to avoid getting sick, plus the services that will help them make a speedy recovery if they do become ill or get hurt. Services covered by FAMIS include: Doctor visits, Well-baby checkups, Hospital visits, Vaccinations, Prescription medicine, Tests and x-rays, Dental care, Emergency care, Vision care and Mental Health benefits. There are no enrollment costs or monthly premiums for FAMIS. When your children get care there may be a small fee called a co-pay for some services. Most co-payments are just $2 or $5 - FAMIS covers the rest. You do not pay for well-baby or well-child checkups. In order to qualify for the FAMIS benefit program, you must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia, under 19 years of age, not covered by health insurance (including Medicaid), a US national, citizen, legal alien, or permanent resident, and you must have an annual household income before taxes of less than $17,961 if one person lives in the household; $24,241, if two people live in the household; $30,521 if three people live in the household; $36,801 if four people live in the household; $43,081 if five people live in the household; $49,361 if six people live in the household; $55,641 if seven people live in the household; $61,921 if eight people live in the household; $68,201 if nine people live in the household; $74,481 if 10 people live in the household; $80,761 if 11 people live in the household; $87,041 if 12 people live in the household; and $93,321 if more than 12 people live in the household. on 1/6/2008 These are good, but these incomes do not cover everyone. in our state there are many people that fall through the cracks. There should be more articles like yours that tell you how to apply and that it's there to help families. Thank you!
