New York City is easy to get around via public transportation, on foot and by taxi. Most visitors have no need or desire to rent a car, as the streets are congested and parking is expensive and hard to find. While in New York City, make use of the many modes of cheap or free transportation.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Take the subway. The New York City subway system, opened in 1904, is one of the busiest and most extensive systems in the world. It runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a week, and encompasses 26 lines and 468 stations. Tickets may be purchased at automated kiosks throughout the system.
Step2
Ride the bus. The New York City Transit Authority, established in 1953, operates over 4500 buses on 200 regular and 40 express routes. There are over 12,000 stops throughout the five borough system. There's hardly a place in the city that's not accessible via the bus system. Fare and schedule information are available online or by calling (718) 330-1234.
Step3
Hail a taxi. If you need to get somewhere in the city quickly, if you're dressed for dinner or the theater or if it's raining outside, hail one of the 10,000 taxi cabs that operate in New York City. The fares are metered and based on time and distance. In addition, tip the driver 15 to 20 percent for good service.
Step4
Hop on the Staten Island Ferry. The Staten Island Ferry connects lower Manhattan with St. George's station on Staten Island. The 25-minute ride is free and offers spectacular views of New York Harbor. The service runs 24 hours a day. For schedule information, consult the ferry's website.
Step5
Walk the streets of New York. Manhattan's grid-like streets and small blocks make it easy to get around on foot. Plus, exploring New York on foot is a great way to appreciate the architecture, sights, aromas and sounds of the city. Arm yourself with a good map and set out.
