How to Use a Golf Ball Retriever

No one wants to hit his ball in the water, or worse, a muddy mess of a hazard. However, everyone does it on occasion. Use a golf ball retriever. Having a one in your bag can make saving your lucky ball a lot easier.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Extend the golf ball retriever out as far as you need it. Most retrievers work on a kaleidoscope method and open to different lengths. Opt for a golf ball rake that can snag several balls at one time out of a hazard.
Step2
Hold the handle with a tight grip and reach for your ball. Scoop or snag the ball depending on the type of golf ball retriever. Some are made to be pushed over the end of the ball, others you must scoop the ball up.
Step3
Use your retriever to get balls out of water, sand, areas under construction, weeds or wooded areas.
Step4
Pull the ball out of the hazard and take it out of the retriever. Collapse the retriever and put it back in your golf bag before continuing on with your game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make your own golf ball retriever using an old club shaft and a small tin can (the size mushrooms come in). Just attach the can to the end of the shaft using duct tape or weld it on and use it to scoop up your ball on the course.
  • Save space and get a ball retriever that snaps on the end of a club. This is handy for use with a putter to get your ball out of the whole without having to bend over for it each time.
  • Don't spend a lot of time trying to retrieve balls from water or other hazards. While it may be tempting, many courses have a "no fishing" or similar rules.
