Many people don't realize that New York State has many wineries. In fact, wineries can be found all over New York State from the western shores of Lake Erie to the far eastern tip of Long Island. If you are a wine connoisseur, or you just enjoy an occasional winery tour, you won't be disappointed by what New York's wineries have to offer.

Step1

Select a region you are interested in visiting. New York's wineries are located in four main regions: Long Island, Hudson River Valley, Western New York and Finger Lakes.

Consider taking a winery tour offered by a company. For example, Finger Lakes Winery Tours offers several packages that range from limousine service between wineries to overnight stays in luxurious accommodations. LI Vineyard Tours offers similar services to the wineries on Long Island.

Identify wineries of interest. Look for small, family-owned wineries in addition to the larger, more popular wineries. Smaller wineries are often staffed by their owners, who are generally eager to provide visitors with interesting stories about their winery and its operation.

Call the wineries you are interested in visiting and ask if they offer tours of the vineyards and tastings. Some wineries provide tours and tastings by appointment only. Don't hesitate to call these wineries for a tour. You'll likely get a private tour that will take you through the daily operations.

Step5

Limit the number of wineries to no more than three per day. While it may be tempting to do a winery tour marathon, you won't experience the uniqueness of each winery. If possible, walk around the grounds or have a picnic.

Be sure to try some Riesling and Gewurtztaminer. New York is known for these sweet white wines.
Don't drink and drive. Several tastes can add up easily. Have a designated driver take you from one location to another or hire a limousine service.
